Designing the Modern Home Library
A home library does something unusual.
It provides storage, but it also gives a room identity.
Whether it contains thousands of books or a carefully edited collection of books, artwork and objects, fitted library joinery can turn an otherwise ordinary wall into one of the defining features of a home.

Start With the Collection
The shelves should be designed around what they will hold.
Paperbacks, hardbacks, art books, vinyl and decorative pieces all require different dimensions.
Rather than imposing identical shelf spacing across an entire elevation, varied or adjustable shelving allows the library to accommodate the collection more naturally.
Consider Proportion
A full-height library needs balance.
One useful approach is to combine closed base cabinetry with open shelving above.
The lower cabinets conceal items that do not need displaying, while the upper shelves create visual depth.
Cochrane Bespoke often uses this principle in tall Victorian rooms, with base cabinetry, open shelving and a cornice tying the composition into the architecture.

Engineer the Shelves Properly
Books are heavy.
Long shelves that have not been properly engineered can bow over time.
Shelf thickness, material and span therefore need to be considered according to the expected load rather than appearance alone.
Integrate Lighting
Recessed LED lighting beneath shelves can give a library an entirely different character after dark.
The fittings themselves should remain discreet so that the books and joinery receive the attention.

Add a Library Ladder
For rooms with generous ceiling heights, a rolling library ladder can provide access to upper shelving while becoming an architectural feature in its own right.
Timber and hardware can be selected to complement the cabinetry.
Modern Doesn't Have to Mean Minimal
A modern library might use walnut veneer and shadow gaps, but it can equally use painted timber and traditional mouldings.
What makes it modern is how intelligently it responds to the room and the collection.
FAQs
Can library shelves be adjustable?
Yes. Adjustable shelf systems allow the arrangement to change as the collection evolves.
Can lighting be built into bookshelves?
Yes. Wiring and LED channels can be incorporated during manufacture.
Can you build libraries around existing architectural features?
Yes. Bespoke cabinetry can work around doors, fireplaces, cornices and irregular walls.
